Moving files from 1 large drive to 2 smaller drives
th flag

I'm trying to write a script that will move files from one large drive to two smaller drives - I thought it would be better if it did it alternately. So move 1st file to drive A, 2nd file to drive B, 3rd file to A etc.... It doesn't actually matter that they are done in order, they could be picked at random (I just thought it would be easier) - it's more important that I have 2 drives containing a simil ...

How to change the scrolling cursor in Gnome 3, Ubuntu 20.04.3
cn flag

When scrolling through a page in many of the apps that come with Gnome by default (Evince for example) the cursor changes from the standard pointer cursor to the move pointer which resembles a compass. I find this latter cursor icon to be absolutely insufferable, particularly because it has a tendency to flicker between itself and the standard pointer cursor.

Custom gdm session logs me out on Ubuntu 18.04
ru flag

I have a requirement where a sandbox user only needs to see a single application without running Gnome or any DE at all (basically a kiosk setup).

I created a new .desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions, which runs a shell script that launches and configures the application. However, shortly afterwards, the whole session is terminated (I am assuming because the batch file ends).

How can I troubleshoot Bluetooth not working on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS?
us flag

On Windows 10, the dongle I am using is detected and the operating system can detect any Bluetooth device sending a signal. On Ubuntu, however, I can't get it to work. I believe there is not a working repo, or hardware support, or outdated driver configs.

What happens is an endless search for devices with nothing being detected.

Here is a screenshot showing the Bluetooth interface searching for devi ...

Unabel to read/write file even with correct permisisons. Can create and delete file

Running into a strange issue - I have 700 file permissions on the current directory, and I am able to create and remove files (which get created with 600), however whenever I try to read or edit the file I get a permissions denied/read only. When I change the file specifically to 604, I am able to read and write the file. I've confirmed that the full path to the directory has proper permissions as well.

Grub GFXMODE makes boot menu font larger, but boots OS in low graphics mode

I have a new computer with Alder Lake CPU, ASROCK main board, and 4K monitor.

I installed Windows 11 and Ubuntu 20.04. I have a working Grub dual boot menu.

The Grub boot menu has a tiny font and is too hard to read.

I added "GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080" to /etc/default/grub and it makes the boot menu larger as intended.

However, Ubuntu now boots in a low-resolution graphics mode, as if the 4K monitor were a 2 ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
