Cannot play AVI video
cn flag

I have an AVI video. I have tried it playing it with the standard Ubuntu "Video" application as well as VLC. It cannot be played.

The video has no problems as it can be played no problem in a windows system.

What should I modify to play this video with VLC or Video? Any customization? codec?

P.S. I have been suggested to "check the format with ffprobe" but I don't know what that means? What is ffprobe ...

Ubuntu 18.04 Emergency mode on boot
tr flag

My Ubuntu 18.04 doesn't boot into the OS, giving this image after Grub. I do not remember making any kernel updates or updating any disk partition recently. enter image description here

I've tried the following.

  1. I have a dual boot, and booting into Windows partition works fine - this rules out RAM issue.
  2. Able to boot into a live Ubuntu Disc successfully.
  3. Ran a memcheck using the live boot disk, and it says no errors found.

I have a laser engraver. I was having issues getting Ubuntu to talk to it via USB. I finally sorted that out, but now when I reboot, I have to run the command below every time, or I can't talk to the engraver. What am I missing so it will stay permanently? Thanks.

Ubuntu 20.04 suspend does not work
jp flag

I found a few related questions, but nothing for 20.04, and questions for 20.04 are about resuming after suspend, or suspend on lid close etc.

I recently updated my XPS 15 laptop from Xubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 and suspend is no longer working. Basically nothing happens when I close the lid or click on "suspend" in xfce4-session-input. The screen goes black, but the CPU and fans are still running. Sa ...

Administer android phone from my ubuntu desktop?
pk flag

Is there some program to help me administer my android phone from my ubuntu desktop (which is always most recent, with updates). By administer I mean transfering files easily both ways (using bluetooth or otherwise), cleaning up the filesystem on the phone and possibly other simple tasks.

(My fingers are too large to do such comfortably on the phone).

Still can't install Wine in Ubuntu 20.04
es flag

I know this question has at least half a dozen with a similar title, but none of those answers or comments help me. So here we go:

I tried to follow the instructions on the Wine Wiki. When I did

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

the command returned to the prompt with no error, so I assumed the architecture was added successfully. I added the repository as instructed, and then I did:

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a mid-2007 Mac Mini (Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz). I received the computer second-hand and it has Linux Mint installed, but I don't have the admin password, so I want to do a clean install.

I am using Windows to make the USB bootable drives. I have followed the instructions in Spade's reply here:

Where are the quick launch entries of the top bar saved in Ubuntu 18.04 Mate 32-bit?
in flag

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 Mate 32-bit. Sometimes when I add a program shortcut to the quick launch section of the top bar, it will be gone after a restart. I hope to bypass that by manually editing the respective configuration file. I am rather new to Linux and do not want to simply edit some file by my own choice. So can you tell me which is the correct file to edit?

What does MATE do on suspend and how to change it to pm-suspend

In Ubuntu Mate 21.04 suspending with sudo pm-suspend works perfectly. But using the power button does not work.

When I change the value to Ask me, the dialog where one can choose to shut down or suspend pops up, and thus I know that the button itself works. Howe ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
