Permission denied on /var/www despite adding user to the owner of directory
cn flag

Hi brand new setup here.

ls -ld /var/www
drwxr-xr-x 3 www-data www-data 4096 Feb 25 18:10 /var/www

so above shows that /var/www belongs to www-data

I then add current user to www-data

sudo usermod -a -G www-data ahdee
groups ahdee
ahdee : ahdee sudo www-data

however while in /var/www I tried this and still got permission denied.

echo "hi" > t.txt

Installing Ubuntu on XPS 13 9370 with i5 8250U (Canonical lists only i5 8350U)
us flag

Please, when I open the list of notebooks on Canonical web page, there are only 3 types of 9370 series (one i7 and two i5). But when Im searching for Dell XPS 13 notebook here in Slovakia, Im fiding only version i5-8250U, but on Canonical web there is 8350U. So my question is, if all the drivers will work 100% properly also on 8250U version.

Thank you very much O:-) M.

nvidia 470 upgrade broke xbacklight
in flag

I just ran a bunch of package updates, going from nvidia 460 to 470. After a reboot, just about everything has survived, except my xbacklight shortcut keys no longer work.

Background: The system brightness control keys have not worked. This is 4-year-old Ubuntu Bug 1775065. I implemented a two-prong workaround:

  • GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi=" in /etc/default/grub.

Our home computer has two user accounts on it, one admin (user A) and one standard user (user B). I'm trying to use Back In Time to create regular, separate backups of each user's home folders (with permissions intact) regardless of who is currently logged in.

IE, if the computer is on, then I want backintime to check for and back up any changes to every user's home folders.

Port forwarded on router, Port Open on PC, Port setup with python server to listen. Port check tools still say it's closed
in flag

UFW is disabled, I used iptables to open the port. If I do netstat -tulpn then it says the port is in a listen state. On the router I have the port forwarded to the linux machine. I figured maybe it was blocked at an ISP level but I tried another port and it's also blocked upon getting this far. What am I missing?

configure laptop to unsuspend when connected to external power

I have a frame.work ubuntu 21.10 laptop that I connect often to a usb-c hub that has a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I currently pull my laptop out and plug in the usb-c hub but then open the laptop lid to un suspend, then close the lid to make my main monitor the only display.

I'd like to put the laptop in a holder that would make it difficult to connect to power and open the lid.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
