Ubuntu shutdown leads to Cold-Boot failure
ye flag

I am booting a new MinisForum PC with Ubuntu 20.04.04LTS, and have a 2nd SSD hosting Win10. If I shutdown the PC using Ubuntu, then any subsequent cold-boot, fails repeatedly (up to 10 times), before the PC finally starts up again.

A Cold-Boot failure is quickly detected, since the fan spins up when I press the power button, but do not spin-down as the Bios starts to run. If the fan stays at high ...

How to enable: Switch back to running GUI from TTY in 20.04 LTS
in flag

I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and an important feature is missing: the option to switch between GUI and TTY.

From the GUI I can switch to one of 4 TTY, by Ctrl-Alt-F3 to Ctrl-Alt-F6. I can login in the tty, do whatever I wish. When I Press Alt-F1, I get to the login-screen, not back to running GUI session.

How can I customize 20.04 LTS in this way?

Add ESM Repository to Landscape on-premise
br flag

I'm currently evaluating a Landscape on-premise installation as a repository master for our systems.

I need to mirror the ESM Repository to the landscape filesystem but can't find any info how to create the series with the API.

I know I have to add the auth-info of the UA-Client to the ESM-Repo-URL. This works fine on our uyuni/spacewalk system. But could you please provide information about the cor ...

Why is the read/write speed of two SSDs so slow when mounted as single logical volume with LVM under Ubuntu 18.04 LTS?
gb flag

For scientific computing, we need fast read/write speeds. So I upgraded one of our machines with 2 SSDs. I used the command

hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

to test the read speed. As reference, our standard HDDs have a read speed of 250MB/s. Each SSD separately has a tested read speed of 2000MB/s (roughly expected).

However, when I connect the two SSDs to one logical volume (following the top-voted answer here:

GNU Grub Version 2.04 exists even after deleting all Ubuntu partitions
al flag

I had Windows 10, Ubuntu 18.04, and Ubuntu 20.04 on the same disk. Since I didn't need Ubuntu anymore, I decided to delete them. First deleted 20.04, but that wiped out the Grub bootloader. Somehow managed to boot into 18.04 and updated grub. But, the Grub CLI was still coming first. Since my Enter key doesn't work, it is a real pain. I finally decide to wipe out the 18.04 partitions as well but the CLI ...

Internal Mic not recording sound in ASUS RoG

(Note: Posting here after getting no reply from unix stackexchange)

I recently bought an ASUS ROG PC thinking 'what could go wrong'. Perhaps now I am paying the price.. at least I got over the hurdle of hDPI. Now, I got a internal microphone problem.

  • The internal microphone works in Windows, does not in Ubuntu
  • System indeed reports microphone, but only dead silence could be recorded

hp laserjetpro p1102w

Someone previously asked this, but no answers so far have been helpful.

I have downloaded the latest (which is hplip-3.22.2-run) and installed it. When I run the hp plug in via the terminal, it opens the gui so I click download it from the hp website (preferred) which I then do. It then pops up a window asking me to use password, which I AM USING THE CORRECT password, and it is failing. I simply  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
