Since the upgrade to 23.04, I'm getting far too frequent (almost daily) crashes: either my Gnome session terminating, throwing me back to the login screen, or some GPU-related crash that ends up with the screen slowly flashing between a black screen and a text-only screen (unresponsive to keyboard input like CTRL+ALT+F1).

The latter happens particularly often if I try to use Google Maps in Firefo ...

Some areas on the top right under the battery indicator (especially for close, maximize, minimize) suddenly became unclickable when opening any app, but when opening File Explorer the area returned to normal by itself and became clickable again.

Can anyone help me to find out what the problem is? And what is the solution?

How to set pulseaudio to send proper S/PDIF (or IEC958) signal via HDMI?

In some former release of Ubuntu I could make audio work, if I forced pulseaudio to convert to 44100 Hz, but it does not seem to work in 20.04 (at least most of the times). https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1829364

I wonder which settings I should use in daemon.conf or elsewhere to make audio work via HDMI cable using my hardware?

Huge arrows in GNOME 43 Quick Settings icons

I've just updated to Ubuntu 23.04 and I noticed that the new arrows on the Quick Settings icons (like Wi-Fi) are huge compared to the icons and with a different background colour. Also the volume icon is quite larger than the other ones. My screen scaling is normal (100%). Any idea what can be causing this? (the texts are in Czech but you get the idea)

Is there a command-line method for converting UTF-8 values into Unicode values?
ck flag

$ od -t x1 <inputfile produces … 0a e2 8c a5 0a ….

The 0a are linefeeds, and e2 8c a5 are the UTF-8 representation of a Unicode character.

For this simple case, I can do it by hand:

[1110]0010 [10]001100 [10]100101 = 10 0011 0010 0101 = 2 3 2 5

What shell command line can convert e2 8c a5 or e28ca5 into 2325?

(For completeness, converting the other way would be good to know too.)

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
