I got a new Dell precision 3470 with Ubuntu 20.04. I noticed that on the login page after I clicked with the mouse or pressed a button, the password input appear with a delay of some seconds. How can I reduce this time?

Is a USB stick required to complete a UEFI install of Ubuntu 20.04 or can it be accomplished with two SSD disks instead?

I almost follow the instructions given at How To Install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) On UEFI and Legacy BIOS System to try to install a UEFI-based Ubuntu operating system. But it does not work, not with an erase-and-install from a UEFI-optioned Ubuntu Live SSD even.

Ubuntu 22.04, Mouse flickering, Keyboard not working (Touchscreen)

Today (2022-12-21) I updated my system. I am using 22.04 (as I did before).

But now the keys of the internal (thinkpad p15 laptop) and the external keyboard are not working anymore. The mouse is usable (internal and external).

It works if I switch to a Wayland session before logging in.

This is repeatable: works in Wayland, does not work in X.org.

sudo command is not working

The file permissions of my ubuntu system got changed somehow and running any sudo command gives the following error

sudo: /etc/sudo.conf is world writable
sudo: /usr/bin/sudo must be owned by uid 0 and have the setuid bit set

Couple of things I tried

  1. pkexec chmod u+s /usr/bin/sudo. Gives error error: pkexec must be setuid root

Disk usage monitor shows disk as almost full but graph doesn't

I do have a problem with my Ubuntu 22.04 instance running in a virtual machine (VMWare Workstation 17). The disk monitor shows up that my main drive is almost full. But when I click on that drive the graph view shows only 36GB used of my 120GB total.

SSH automatically disconnect you after successfully logged in

So I cleaned up my spaces in disk and then I restarted server after that I tried SSH it in again but it automatically disconnect from me in any devices (like ConnectBot in android and my another laptop).

Cant preserve folder contents that are automatically created by another script

Cannot switch between gnome-terminal tabs with alt+num in ubuntu 20.04

I can move between tabs with ctrl+page up and ctrl+page down. But I cannot switch a specific tab with alt+num. The keyboard shortcuts are correctly set as shown in this screenshot:

With alt+1, I only get 1 in the terminal. My alt key is working properly. I used dconf-editor and found that mnemonics has been disabled already.

ASUS VA249 HE monitors on ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4 Motherboard

I have dual monitor setup. Both monitors are Asus models VA249 HE. They are connected to the Display and HDMI ports of the Asus Motherboard. I am running Ubuntu Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS.

Setup:

  • Ubuntu 22.04, clean install.
  • Dell G15 5521 Laptop
  • Latest firmware
  • 6.0.8-060008-generic
  • Nvidia 525.60.11
  • X11 Ubuntu flavour of Gnome

Very randomly and very infrequently (probably once a day for me) a key appears to get stuck and auto-repeats. Pressing any other key stops the auto repeat.

This happens with the default kernel and with 6.0.8.

Linux way to amplify sound

The Ubuntu sound is much quieter than Windows on the same machine. When I use my bluetooth headphones, the sound is much quieter than from my android phone or windows. Latest Ubuntu has some "overamplify" UI option which almost don't do change. Most other questions about sound have exactly only this answer. I didn't find a way to amplify the sound.

When switching between laptop and tablet mode, the airplane mode automatically toggles.

Expected behaviour: No link between tablet mode and airplane mode.

I recently noticed one of my Ubuntu Laptops had started to run very slow. After doing some searching here for tools to check CPU status and comparing with another PC with the same version I can see the slow laptop is only running at minimum CPU speed.
